Swisscom mobile network heading for 1 Gbit/s data speed

Swisscom
Telecom operator Swisscom today said its mobile network is heading for offering 1 Gbit/s data speed to its customers in Switzerland.

1 Gbit/s speed is around seven times faster than three years ago. Swisscom is thus consolidating its role as a technology leader in Switzerland.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone is already supporting around 800 Mbit/s data speed in a live network from Swisscom. Swisscom will be offering this smartphone from 6 June 2017. There will be more smartphones that support similar high speeds in the market shortly.

Swisscom is showing the mobile network speed of more than 800 Mbit/s in the Swisscom Shop in Zurich’s Füsslistrasse.

Swisscom has equipped its Swisscom Shop in Zurich’s Fusslistrasse with technology: by combining the four LTE 800, 1800, 2100 and 2600 frequency bands via carrier aggregation it can offer these high speeds, which are also enhanced by 4×4 MiMo (multiple input, multiple output) and advanced 256-QAM modulation.

Swisscom works with technology partner Ericsson for developing its mobile network. It already offers 40 percent of the Swiss population speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. It is the only mobile provider in Switzerland offering speeds up to 450 Mbit/s to 15 percent of the population.

Swisscom said this current advance doubles the maximum speed and Swisscom plans to upgrade further sites to 1 Gbit/s this year. Through high and sustained investment in the mobile network, Swisscom is able to offer its customers access to the best network.
