Deutsche Telekom Builds New Leadership Team to Drive €30 Billion Fiber, 5G, Cloud and AI Strategy

Deutsche Telekom is assembling a new generation of senior management with experience spanning Amazon Web Services, Comcast, Microsoft, Vodafone, European telecom operations, corporate finance and digital products as the telecom group accelerates investment in fiber, 5G, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and software-driven networks.

Deutsche Telekom new team in 2026

The leadership changes will bring Jan Hofmeyr onto Deutsche Telekom’s Board of Management as the new Board Member for Product and Technology, Dhananjay Mirchandani as the next Chief Financial Officer, and Mladen Mitic as Chief Product & Digital Officer.

The appointments are significant because they come as Deutsche Telekom moves beyond conventional network expansion toward a technology strategy integrating telecom networks with cloud platforms, AI, automation and digital services.

Deutsche Telekom invested around €17 billion in 2025, primarily in building and operating networks. In Germany alone, the company plans to invest €30 billion in fiber infrastructure through 2030, following approximately €28 billion of investment during the previous five years.

The new management team will therefore inherit responsibility for one of Europe’s largest telecom investment and technology transformation programmes.

Jan Hofmeyr Brings AWS, Comcast and Microsoft Expertise to Deutsche Telekom

Jan Hofmeyr, 58, will become Deutsche Telekom’s new Board Member for Product and Technology on November 1, 2026, succeeding Dr. Abdurazak Mudesir.

Hofmeyr brings more than three decades of technology and product leadership experience spanning cloud infrastructure, telecommunications and consumer technology platforms.

His most recent experience is particularly relevant to Deutsche Telekom’s strategy.

At Amazon Web Services, Hofmeyr served as Vice President and led product and technology for AWS Edge services, including AWS Outposts. He later oversaw Amazon EC2 Networking services before leading the AWS Telco Industry business serving telecommunications companies globally.

Before AWS, Hofmeyr spent more than a decade at Comcast, eventually serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer. His responsibilities covered Comcast’s core network, communications platforms, national reliability engineering and Cloud Services organisation.

He also led the team that developed and launched Comcast’s X1 platform, which eventually scaled to more than 30 million devices, as well as its syndication business.

Hofmeyr previously spent seven years at Microsoft as Director of TV Strategy. He co-founded Microsoft’s eHome division and led the development of Windows Media Center Edition. He received Microsoft’s IP Leadership Award in 2006 and holds several patents.

His career began in South Africa, where he helped launch the country’s first digital satellite television service and later helped launch MWEB, one of South Africa’s first internet service providers. Hofmeyr holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Electronic Engineering from Stellenbosch University.

Hofmeyr Takes Charge as Deutsche Telekom Pushes Fiber and 5G

Hofmeyr arrives with Deutsche Telekom’s network transformation already operating at enormous scale.

At the end of June 2026, Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network covered around 99 percent of Germany’s population, while 13.6 million households and companies could subscribe to its fiber services.

Across Deutsche Telekom’s European operations, average 5G population coverage had reached 93.9 percent, while 11.7 million households had access to its gigabit-capable fiber networks.

Germany remains one of the biggest areas of investment.

Deutsche Telekom announced an additional €800 million of fiber investment over three years, taking planned fiber investment to €30 billion through 2030. The operator aims to make fiber available to another 2.5 million households and businesses during 2026.

In 2025, Deutsche Telekom’s German fiber expansion reached 2.7 million additional households and companies, taking its fiber footprint to 12.6 million premises at the beginning of 2026. The company said it was creating roughly seven new fiber connections every minute.

The expansion has continued in 2026, with fiber availability reaching 13.6 million premises by the end of June.

Mobile infrastructure is another priority. Deutsche Telekom said in January that it planned to extend 5G coverage across another 16,000 square kilometres during 2026. It also had around 3,000 Open RAN antennas across more than 1,000 network locations.

Networks, Cloud and AI Move Closer Together

Hofmeyr’s mandate also indicates how Deutsche Telekom’s technology strategy is changing.

He wants the company to bring networks, cloud, AI and digital platforms closer together, with Deutsche Telekom aiming not merely to consume technology but to play a role in shaping the future telecom technology environment.

AI is already becoming part of Deutsche Telekom’s network and customer-service operations.

For 2026, Deutsche Telekom has targeted more than 4 million customer contacts resolved through chatbots and voicebots, while aiming to reduce the overall number of service contacts by 10 percent annually.

It is also targeting 100 percent AI-based automatic call documentation, a 50 percent increase in contacts handled by AI voicebots, and AI-based construction supervision at 95 percent of locations.

Deutsche Telekom is also developing AI infrastructure itself.

In February 2026, Deutsche Telekom and Nvidia started operating their Industrial AI Cloud for European manufacturers in Germany. Deutsche Telekom provides the secure infrastructure, data-center operations, sales and security, while Nvidia supplies GPUs and associated hardware.

This cloud, AI and network convergence makes Hofmeyr’s previous experience at AWS increasingly relevant to Deutsche Telekom’s future technology direction.

Dhananjay Mirchandani to Become Deutsche Telekom CFO

While Hofmeyr brings major external technology-platform experience, Dhananjay Mirchandani represents continuity within Deutsche Telekom.

Mirchandani, 51, will succeed Christian Illek as Chief Financial Officer on May 1, 2027, following Deutsche Telekom’s 2027 Annual General Meeting.

Mirchandani began his career with consulting firm AT Kearney in 2000, working on projects in Europe and the Americas. In 2007, he moved to BCG, where he primarily advised telecommunications, cable and media companies until 2010.

He subsequently joined Vodafone Germany as Head of Broadband & TV, where his responsibilities included the commercial integration of Kabel Deutschland into Vodafone Group.

Mirchandani then became a capital-markets analyst at Bernstein Research covering European telecommunications companies.

He joined Deutsche Telekom in 2019 as Head of Finance & Investment Management in Group Development.

His responsibilities included financial planning and performance management as well as overseeing the strategic development and subsequent sale of T-Mobile Netherlands and several significant cell-tower transactions.

Mirchandani became Head of Finance Private Customers at Telekom Deutschland in 2023. Since 2024, he has served as Head of Group Controlling with responsibility for the group’s financial planning, performance management, cash flow management and risk management.

His experience across telecom operations, consulting, capital markets, transactions and Deutsche Telekom’s internal financial organisation gives the company a CFO familiar with both the operational and investment sides of the industry.

Mirchandani Will Oversee Major Telecom Investment Programme

Mirchandani will inherit substantial responsibility for financing Deutsche Telekom’s network and technology strategy.

Deutsche Telekom recorded cash capex before spectrum of €7.8 billion during the first half of 2026, compared with €8.2 billion in the previous-year period. Including spectrum, cash capex was approximately €8.4 billion, down from €9.2 billion.

Mladen Mitic to Lead Product and Digital Strategy

Mladen Mitic, 49, adds another dimension to the new leadership structure: converting technology infrastructure into products and customer experiences.

Mitic will become Deutsche Telekom’s Chief Product & Digital Officer from October 1, 2026 and will subsequently report to Hofmeyr. He succeeds Jonathan Abrahamson.

Mitic has 20 years of telecommunications experience.

Currently Senior Vice President B2C Commercial Growth in Deutsche Telekom’s Europe Board division, he previously held senior management positions at Telenor Norway and TDC Business in Denmark.

Between 2021 and 2024, Mitic was a member of the Board of Management and Chief Commercial Officer at Slovak Telekom. Since June 2024, he has been responsible for B2C Commercial Growth within Deutsche Telekom’s Europe business.

Mitic believes software and AI will define the next decade of telecommunications. His priority will be to use Deutsche Telekom’s network scale and infrastructure to create simpler and more personalised products while improving the speed at which services are developed for customers.

Deutsche Telekom’s New Team Reflects Shift from Connectivity to AI-Driven Networks

The profiles of Deutsche Telekom’s three incoming executives reveal a broader transformation taking place within the telecom industry.

Jan Hofmeyr contributes hyperscale cloud, network and platform experience from AWS, Comcast and Microsoft. Dhananjay Mirchandani provides expertise spanning telecom strategy, finance, investment, M&A and capital markets. Mladen Mitic brings commercial, product and customer-growth experience from several European telecom markets.
