Mobile Internet speed in India at 1.7 Mbps in Q3 2014 was the lowest against several countries including South Korea, Singapore, Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, etc, said Akamai Technologies.

A TRAI report on Wednesday said India had 66.56 million wireless – including phones and dongles in November 2014. The top five wireless broadband service providers in November 2014 were Bharti Airtel with 16.77 million, Vodafone 15.60 million, Idea Cellular 12.25 million, BSNL 8.72 million and Reliance Communications 6.67 million.

Mobile Internet speed in India at 1.7 Mbps is below expectations of wireless users. The mobile Internet speed is languishing at this level because telecom operator such as Tata Docomo, Reliance Communications, MTS India, Uninor, BSNL, MTNL, Aircel, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular are not making enough investment in telecom infrastructure.
South Korea leads in terms of mobile Internet speed at 18.2 Mbps in the third quarter of 2014.
Incidentally, several developing nations such as Sri Lanka with mobile Internet speed of 2.6 Mbps, Thailand 2.8 Mbps, Taiwan 3.5 Mbps and China 6.2 Mbps had better connectivity than India. Speed of mobile Internet is a big concern for Indians.
Iran had the lowest average mobile connection speed at 0.9 Mbps. Slovakia joined South Korea above the 10 Mbps high broadband threshold at 10.9 Mbps.
