IoT Cellular connections to surge more than 4x by 2025

Cellular for IoTIoT Cellular connections will increase more than 4x to reach over 2.4 billion by 2025, according to the latest Strategy Analytics IoT Strategies report “IoT Cellular Connections by Industry Vertical, Bandwidth and Region.

Automotive, utility and security vertical markets, which will be driving IoT cellular connections, will be accounting for over 46 percent of global IoT cellular connections in 2025. The automotive vertical market will remain the single largest consumer of IoT cellular connections. The global automotive vertical will increase its market share in IoT cellular by 2025.

The telecom industry started focusing on the path to 5G and low power 3GPP offerings, such as LTE Cat M1 and NB IoT.

“The bewildering array of choices also runs the risk of creating confusion for customers with regard to which technologies should be employed in which use cases,” said Andrew Brown, executive director of Enterprise and IoT Research at Strategy Analytics.

Asia Pacific will remain the single largest region for cellular IoT connections, accounting for almost 1 billion connections in 2025.

Asia Pacific, North America, and Western Europe together will be accounting for over 75 percent of global cellular IoT connections in 2025.
