According to a recent report by IDC, Bangladesh’s smartphone market experienced significant growth in the second quarter of 2024, with shipments reaching 2.0 million units — a 20.1 percent increase year-on-year.
Bangladesh had 118.49 million mobile internet users as of December 2023. GrameenPhone, Robi Axiata, Banglalink and Teletalk are the leading telecom service operators in Bangladesh. The number of mobile subscribers has reached 190.81 million in Bangladesh.
Market Leaders
Transsion, Realme, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo are the smartphone market leaders in Bangladesh during Q2 2024.
Transsion continued to dominate the ultra-low-end segment for the eighth consecutive quarter, driven by the popularity of models like the Spark Go 2024 and A05s. However, the brand faced a 10 percent year-on-year decline in its overall market share. In the low-end segment, Xiaomi emerged as the leader, while Vivo took the top spot in the mid-range category.
5G Adoption
The report highlights a growing interest in 5G smartphones, which accounted for 15 percent of the total smartphone market share. Notably, shipments of 5G devices surged by 430 percent year-on-year in Q2 2024, despite only constituting 8 percent of total smartphone shipments.
The government of Bangladesh has pledged to maintain the existing 5G agenda, with top telecom companies rolling out 5G networks under unified licenses from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). These companies are also focused on reducing 5G data costs while prioritizing the expansion of 4G networks across the country.
In a tight race for market share, realme tied with Xiaomi for second place. Realme’s top-selling models, the Note 50 and C65, were on par with Xiaomi’s Redmi 13 and Redmi A3.
