Telecom Egypt has selected Nokia and Ericsson for 5G network contracts, Microsoft for boosting Cloud business and Cisco for broadband segment.
Antar Kandil, is the chief information officer and Tarek Shamekh is the chief technology officer of Telecom Egypt.
Nokia
Adel Hamed, chief executive officer of Telecom Egypt, and Amr K. El Leithy, head of the Middle East and Africa market, Nokia, signed the 5G equipment deal at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona.
Adel Hamed, CEO of Telecom Egypt, said: “This is an ideal opportunity for us to put a strategic roadmap to develop our network capabilities and make sure of its readiness to deploy 5G technologies.”
Telecom Egypt aims to offer Internet of Things (IoT) services – powered by 5G network — to enable smart cities in the country as part of the strategy to enhance revenue streams from local enterprises.
Ericsson
Ericsson earlier announced Telecom Egypt has deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) to its full-stack telco cloud infrastructure. The aim is to operate telco cloud environment intelligently and efficiently to enable cloud Automation and orchestration.
Telecom Egypt announced the upgrade of its Cloud Core Network to be 5G ready in partnership with Ericsson.
Telecom Egypt had gone live in September 2017 with Ericsson virtual Evolved Packet Core deployed on Ericsson’s Network Functions Virtualization infrastructure (NFVI). The solution will assist Telecom Egypt to improve speed, efficiency, and agility.
Cisco
Telecom Egypt has selected Cisco to serve virtual network functions (VNFs) in a full-stack telco cloud and further its network modernization plans.
Telecom Egypt aims to transform its network to introduce services faster and improve user experience.
Cisco will assist Telecom Egypt in building an application delivery infrastructure using virtualization and cloud-native paradigms and anchoring them to the reference architectures of network functions virtualization (NFV) in the fixed broadband environment.
Microsoft
Microsoft announced its partnership with Telecom Egypt to extend Microsoft’s cloud network to Egypt. Telecom Egypt will provide low-latency connectivity into and across Egypt to help enhance performance and increase reliability for customers of Microsoft services.
Telecom Egypt reported revenue of EGP 22.8 billion (+23 percent) driven by 36 percent growth in the retail segment in 2018. Wholesale grew 12 percent boosted by the Bharti Airtel agreement (EGP 1.6 billion).
Telecom Egypt said its customer base grew – with fixed broadband growing 29 percent and fixed voice increasing 10 percent. Mobile subscribers of Telecom Egypt reached 3.9 million subscribers.
Capex intensity of Telecom Egypt reached 37 percent, slightly lower than last year’s 40 percent. The Capex focus of Telecom Egypt was towards the fibre replacement program in the country.
