SK Telecom signs deal with drone company DJI to boost data revenue

SK Telecom signed an agreement with DJI to co-develop drone-based real-time video streaming product and solution.

SK Telecom, which has 23 million 4G subscribers, aims to utilize the partnership with DJI to expand drone-based real-time video streaming technology using mobile communications network.

SK Telecom that clocked revenue of KRW 17.520 trillion in 2017 will provide live video streaming encoder, mobile application and server software solution using T live caster, its live video streaming technology.

In a statement issued on Monday, SK Telecom said the solution will enable live streaming of HD footage on DJI drones and hand-held gimbal products such as the Osmo, with minimal latency via mobile communications network.

SK Telecom’s T live caster and DJI’s drones will expand the uses for drones across industries including agriculture, logistics, exploration, public safety and the media and entertainment sector which includes TV broadcasting, YouTube, and Facebook Live that requires live streaming videos.

DJI’s drone flight control application called DJI Go may be integrated with SK Telecom’s streaming application called T live caster Smart, allowing DJI’s drones and gimbals to carry out video streaming via mobile communications network.

The solution will be first deployed in South Korea, the U.S. and Japan, and the service will expand to countries across the world.

Video transmission app will also run on 5G devices including smartphones and tablet, rendering streaming of 4K or 8K drone videos.
