This fourth-generation mobile chipset brings a significant performance boost, powered by the All Big Core design built on Arm’s v9.2 CPU architecture. MediaTek promises up to 35 percent faster single-core and 28 percent faster multi-core performance than the previous Dimensity 9300, with a 40 percent increase in power efficiency due to its 3nm process.

The share of AI-capable smartphones will be 16 percent in 2024 and 54 percent in 2028, Canalys said earlier. Consumer demand for functionalities such as AI agents and on-device processing is anticipated to reflect in the launch of premium smartphone models.

“The evolution of on-device AI solutions for smartphones depends heavily on strategic alliances among brands, chipset providers, and software firms. Vendors will look for open collaboration with industry leaders to bring unique and personalized AI solutions to end users,” Canalys Senior Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said.

MediaTek said the first AI smartphones featuring this chipset are expected to hit the market in Q4 2024. MediaTek did not reveal the name of its smartphone partners who will use the Dimensity 9400 chipset.

Key innovations include:

On-device LoRA training and video generation for generative AI.

Industry-leading 8th-gen NPU for up to 80 percent faster large language model (LLM) prompt performance.

The 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, offering 40 percent faster raytracing and PC-level gaming features.

Enhanced photography with MediaTek Imagiq 1090, featuring power-efficient HDR video capture.

The Dimensity 9400 is also set to power Wi-Fi 7, offering up to 7Gbps speeds, and supports 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual Active for flexibility in connectivity.

Joe Chen, President of MediaTek, said: “The Dimensity 9400 continues our legacy of delivering top-tier performance with an efficient design for an optimal user experience.”

MediaTek recently reported that its second-quarter revenue was NT$127.271 billion, down 4.6 percent sequentially and up 29.7 percent year-over-year. Revenue fell q-o-q with sequential growth in Smart Edge Platforms and Power IC and sequential decline in Mobile Phone. MediaTek’s Q2 revenue increased y-o-y with growth across the three revenue groups.
