Indian electronics company Videocon on Saturday said that it started manufacturing mobile handsets at its Salt Lake facility Kolkata.

Earlier this year, the company had said that it was planning to start three manufacturing units in the country in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Madurai.

A top company official of Videocon said that the new facility is the first manufacturing unit in the eastern region of the country, and the group’s second mobile manufacturing plant after Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

The facility, which will only make feature phones at the start, will have a production capacity of three million units a year. The unit, which will make smartphones and tablets as well, entailed an investment of Rs 50 crore for the group.

The Videocon official also said that in future, the facility would also manufacture mobile handsets of other companies as well.
