Telefonica Pulls Out of Chile in $1.2 bn Deal with Xavier Niel–Backed Buyers

Spanish telecom major Telefonica has agreed to sell its Chilean mobile operations to French holding company NJJ and Luxembourg-based Millicom in a deal valued at about $1.2 billion, according to Reuters. Both buyers are controlled by billionaire Xavier Niel. The transaction includes an upfront cash payment of $50 million, around $340 million in deferred payments linked to performance targets, and up to $150 million tied to future market milestones. The sale covers Telefonica’s entire Chile unit, which carried net debt of €479 million at the end of 2025.

German Court Hands Meta Costly Defeat in Telecom Network Dispute

Meta Platforms’ subsidiary Edge Network Services has lost an appeal in Germany, reinforcing a ruling that requires it to pay around €30 million ($36 million) to Deutsche Telekom for network services. The case centers on data traffic generated by Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, between March 2021 and August 2024. Deutsche Telekom argued that Meta continued using its network interconnection points after a commercial agreement expired and should therefore compensate the operator. Meta countered that the traffic exchange fell under settlement-free peering arrangements commonly used on the internet. The court sided with Deutsche Telekom, marking a notable win for telecom operators seeking payment from large technology companies for heavy network usage.

The agreement covers the deployment of Subex’s business assurance solutions designed to strengthen revenue protection, improve billing accuracy, and enhance operational controls through advanced analytics. The contract expands Subex’s presence in the MEA telecom market and adds to its portfolio of long-term international engagements. It also reflects continued demand from telecom operators for data-driven assurance solutions to manage complex networks and safeguard revenues.
