T-Mobile has completed its spectrum transaction with Grain Management, receiving $2.9 billion in cash and all of Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum licences in exchange for the mobile operator’s 800 MHz spectrum portfolio.
The transaction, approved by the Federal Communications Commission on July 1, 2026, strengthens T-Mobile’s access to valuable low-band spectrum while transferring its 800 MHz holdings to an investor focused on digital infrastructure.
T-Mobile gains 600 MHz spectrum for wider 5G coverage
T-Mobile plans to deploy Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum licences across its network. The additional low-band spectrum could help the operator improve coverage, particularly in rural areas and inside buildings, while supporting more consistent customer experiences across multiple markets.
The 600 MHz spectrum is strategically important for T-Mobile because lower-frequency signals can travel longer distances and penetrate physical obstacles more effectively than higher-frequency spectrum. Integrating the licences into T-Mobile’s network could therefore strengthen the coverage layer underpinning its 5G services.
T-Mobile said the acquired spectrum is already helping deliver improved customer experiences in several markets.
Grain targets utilities and critical infrastructure operators
Grain Management plans to market the acquired 800 MHz spectrum portfolio to utilities, critical infrastructure operators, rural and regional communications providers, and other enterprises.
The investment firm is working with energy and infrastructure specialist Black & Veatch to identify opportunities for the spectrum. The initiative is designed to address unmet telecommunications requirements across industries that depend on secure, resilient and efficient communications networks.
Potential users could employ the 800 MHz spectrum to modernise critical network infrastructure and support mission-critical communications. Utilities and infrastructure operators require dependable connectivity for functions such as operational coordination, remote monitoring and network resilience.
The transaction may consequently extend the value of the spectrum beyond conventional consumer mobile services, supporting communications infrastructure that serves businesses, utilities and communities across the United States.
Deal follows March 2025 agreement
T-Mobile and Grain Management reached an agreement in principle on March 20, 2025, to transfer the operator’s 800 MHz spectrum portfolio.
Under the original terms, T-Mobile was set to receive a combination of cash and all the 600 MHz spectrum licences owned by Grain. Completion of the transaction confirms that T-Mobile has received $2.9 billion in cash alongside the full 600 MHz portfolio.
The deal allows T-Mobile to concentrate its low-band spectrum strategy around 600 MHz while enabling Grain to develop specialised uses for the 800 MHz assets.
