MTN and Huawei Unveil Nigeria’s First 800G Hybrid Optical Network

MTN Nigeria and Huawei launched Nigeria’s first hybrid 400G–800G Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) on MTN’s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) backbone in Lagos. The deployment includes a dual-layer optical switching system (L0 + L1 ASON) and the first single-wavelength 800G optical channel in the country. The upgrade uses Huawei’s 400G/800G platforms, Optical Cross-Connect (OXC), and hybrid ASON technology. This supports increased data demand while reducing operational complexity. The network can handle cloud computing, enterprise platforms, broadband, and mobile services. It features adaptive routing and automated recovery for better network resilience.

Nigerian Telecom Regulators Set August Deadline for Tower Firms Over Service Failures

Nigeria’s Communications Commission (NCC) set an August 2025 deadline for tower companies to fix service failures or face penalties. The NCC expanded Quality of Service regulations to hold tower firms accountable for technical standards, not just mobile operators. To enforce this, the NCC introduced a Major Incident Reporting Portal for real-time disruption reports and will publish performance dashboards tracking Key Performance Indicators.

Ericsson and e& UAE Team Up to Boost 5G Network with New Technologies and Energy Efficiency

Ericsson and e& UAE have entered a three-year agreement to improve e& UAE’s 5G Radio Access Network (RAN). Ericsson will deploy radio technology aimed at increasing network capacity and extending coverage. The upgrade will introduce 5G Advanced features, including the first commercial use of Reduced Capability (RedCap) and Critical IoT technologies in the Middle East and Africa. These technologies support devices with lower power consumption and enhanced connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Additionally, parts of the existing network will be modernized to improve energy efficiency in line with UAE’s Green Agenda 2030. This modernization aims to reduce the environmental impact of the network. The partnership represents a step toward expanding 5G capabilities, enhancing connectivity, and supporting the growing demand for IoT services in the region.

First 5G Standalone Indoor Sharing Trial in Saudi Arabia Cuts Costs and Boosts Coverage

Nokia, CST, Mobily, Zain, and ACES completed the first 5G Standalone (SA) indoor sharing trial in Saudi Arabia, allowing multiple operators to deliver 5G inside buildings using a single system. This reduces deployment costs by over 60 percent by eliminating duplicate equipment and 4G anchors. The trial used sharable indoor spectrum in the 4.0–4.1 GHz band and active sharing techniques, demonstrating how unified infrastructure can support multiple operators simultaneously, improving spectrum efficiency and speeding up 5G coverage in business districts and public venues.
