BOE to overtake LG Display as Apple’s leading MacBook display panel supplier

BOE is poised to overtake LG Display as Apple’s leading MacBook display panel supplier in 2025, marking a strategic shift in Apple’s supply chain dynamics.

According to Omdia data, BOE’s share of Apple’s MacBook display panel supply has steadily grown from 21 percent in 2022 to 30 percent in 2023 and 39 percent in 2024, with a forecasted leap to 51 percent in 2025.

LG Display’s share has declined from 52 percent in 2022 to 44 percent in 2024, and is expected to drop further to 35 percent in 2025, despite a temporary spike to 62 percent in 2023.

Sharp’s share has consistently shrunk — from 27 percent in 2022 to 17 percent in 2024 — with a modest rebound to 14 percent projected in 2025, after bottoming out at 8 percent in 2023.

BOE will be capturing a commanding 51 percent share of Apple’s MacBook panel supply in 2025 — an 12 percentage point increase year-over-year — outpacing LG Display, whose share is set to fall to 35 percent, Omdia’s Tablet and Notebook Display and OEM Intelligence Service forecasts.

BOE’s ascent is driven by its expanding role in supporting Apple’s MacBook Air models, particularly the high-demand 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch variants, Linda Lin , Senior Principal Analyst, Tablet and Notebook Display and OEM, said.

These models are expected to account for BOE’s shipment of 11.5 million panels to Apple in 2025 —marking the first time BOE will supply over half of Apple’s MacBook panels and signaling a significant pivot in Apple’s sourcing strategy.

Meanwhile, LG Display is projected to see a 12.2 percent decline in shipments to 8.48 million units, losing nine percentage points in market share versus 2024. The decline is attributed to Apple shifting more MacBook Air orders to BOE, as well as a broader demand drop for the MacBook Pro, which has traditionally been LG Display’s stronghold.

Apple’s MacBook panel procurement is expected to reach 22.5 million units in 2025, reflecting a 1 percent increase. This volume is partially fueled by Apple frontloading production in late 2024 and early 2025 in anticipation of U.S. tariff changes, shifting OEM production from China to Vietnam, and building up MacBook Air inventory for the U.S. market.

Although this surge temporarily benefited all major suppliers — BOE, LG Display, and Sharp — BOE emerged as the primary long-term beneficiary due to its strong alignment with Apple’s bestselling models.

Sharp, which supplies panels for the 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro, is expected to see shipments fall 20.8 percent year-over-year to 3.1 million units, reducing its market share to 14 percent.

Looking ahead, the MacBook panel landscape is likely to face further disruption with the anticipated adoption of OLED displays in 2026. Samsung Display is expected to join Apple’s supply chain at that point, intensifying competition as the industry transitions from LCD to OLED.

For 2025, however, BOE is set to dominate the MacBook LCD market — securing its lead through volume gains, strategic alignment with Apple’s growth models.
