Asia Pacific to generate 40% of total smartphone traffic by 2021: Ericsson Mobility Report

The Ericsson Mobility Report says Asia Pacific will generate 40 percent of total smartphone traffic by 2021.

In the next 5 years, monthly smartphone data consumption per active subscription in North America will be 22 GB against 18 GB in Western Europe and 7 GB in Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific region will have the largest share of total smartphone traffic in 2021, due to growth in the number of subscriptions. The growth drivers will be rapid growth in smartphones and video content.

Total mobile data traffic is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 45 percent, said the Ericsson Mobility Report.

The mobile data traffic growth will result in a ten-fold increase in total traffic for all devices by the end of 2021.
Factors such as data plans, user device capabilities and network performance all impact data consumption per subscriber. Even switching to a new version of the same device could typically increase data consumption by 25–40 percent.
