Verizon starts offering private 5G network in the US

Verizon Business announced the launch of its first commercially available private 5G network in the U.S. to offer high-speed indoor or outdoor connectivity to businesses and government departments.

“You can go up to four or five gigabit (per second) speed easily today, but what is interesting is that you have four or five gigabits consistently,” Sowmyanarayan Sampath, chief revenue officer of Verizon Business, said.

Verizon has been trialing private 5G with several customers and has partnered with Microsoft and Amazon, among others, Reuters reported.

The private 5G network, managed by Verizon, would keep all cellular traffic on the premises of the customer to increase security, while authorised remote users can still access applications.

Verizon has been working with Corning, WeWork, Tyndall Air Force Base and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The company is using Corning radios and Ericsson’s core equipment for the initial deployment, and would be open to using gear from Nokia and Samsung at a later stage, Sampath said.

The networks are built on existing 4G networks to account for backward and forward compatibility for devices.

Verizon is seeing a lot of demand from financial institutions to increase speed of trading flows using 5G, and warehouses, which are planning to use robots and autonomous vehicles, Sampath said.

Ahead of the employees returning to work, several companies are also turning to 5G to upgrade their office networks to increase speeds and rearrange conference rooms to account for more video calls while maintaining social distancing.

Verizon Business in April announced that 5G Business Internet, a fixed-wireless connectivity offering for businesses, is expanding to 21 new U.S. cities.

5G Business Internet, an alternative to cable, leverages Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband technology as the connectivity backbone to run your entire business, from point of sales systems to employee productivity devices, with professional installation included.
