Verizon Enterprise bags contracts worth $250 million from U.S. Army

Telecom Lead America: Verizon Enterprise Solutions, as
part of a General Dynamics-led team, has won two contracts to develop and
implement fixed and mobile cloud computing capacity for the U.S. Army under the
Area Processing Centers Army Private Cloud 2 initiative (APC2).

Verizon, through its IT services unit Terremark, will
provide infrastructure including cloud assets designed to meet federal security
guidelines, and server, network and storage capacity — for the initiative.

“There is an amazing transformation under way in the
federal government and the U.S. military as agencies become increasingly
virtual to operate more efficiently and effectively on behalf of our nation. By
moving to the cloud, the Army will have more flexibility in how IT resources
are consumed while providing better economics, greater agility and broader
access to information for civilian and military personnel,”
said Susan Zeleniak, senior vice president for public sector markets at Verizon.

The five-year contracts have a combined potential value
of $249.8 million to all awardees.

Under the APC2 Fixed Suite 1 contract, Verizon will work
with General Dynamics to establish a secure, reliable and cost-effective
computing platform for the Army.

Under the Mobile Suite 2 contract, Verizon will work with
General Dynamics to provide a mobile data center solution to support business
continuity plans and cases where rapid deployment of computing is critical.

APC2 is a new section of the LandWarNet strategic
initiative, which covers all Army information computing capabilities such as
collecting, processing and storing information.

Through the program, the Army intends to lower
application migration, hosting, administration and maintenance costs by moving
to cloud infrastructure and reducing the number of data centers it operates.

Recently, Verizon
announced that it will launch a new offering called Verizon Open Video
Communications.

The new offering will enable businesses and government
agencies to conduct secure, video meetings across private or public networks on
multiple video platforms – including telepresence and video conferencing — on
desktops and tablets.
