Top 10 Mobile Operators in the World by Subscribers in 2026: China Mobile, Airtel and Jio Lead

The world’s largest mobile operators are reaching extraordinary scale in 2026, led by China Mobile with more than 1 billion subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.

Worldwide mobile operators and subscribers 2026

Asia dominates the global subscriber rankings, but America Movil, MTN, Orange and Vodafone Idea demonstrate the scale of mobile markets across Latin America, Africa, Europe and India.

This ranking focuses primarily on mobile subscribers or mobile accesses, rather than revenue, broadband connections or total connectivity. IoT devices are excluded wherever they can be identified because counting connected machines alongside individual mobile customers would distort the comparison.

1. China Mobile — 1.011 Billion Mobile Subscribers

China Mobile remains the world’s largest mobile operator with approximately 1.011 billion mobile subscribers in H1 2026.

Its scale is particularly striking in 5G. China Mobile had 687 million 5G network customers and approximately 2.94 million 5G base stations.

H1 operating revenue reached RMB538.035 billion, while full-year capex is planned at RMB136.6 billion.

China Mobile is increasingly directing investment toward computing and AI infrastructure as its traditional mobile network reaches enormous scale.

The shift reflects how 5G network investment is evolving from coverage expansion toward capacity, computing and intelligent networks.

2. Bharti Airtel — 680.9 Million Customers

Bharti Airtel reported approximately 680.9 million consolidated customers in Q1 FY27.

Airtel had already crossed 650 million customers in April 2026, when the company cited GSMA Intelligence in describing itself as the world’s second-largest telecom operator by mobile customer base.

India mobile customers reached 376.5 million, while Airtel’s smartphone customer base increased to 301.8 million.

The company’s scale comes from its extensive operations across India and Africa, giving Airtel exposure to two of the world’s biggest mobile growth regions.

Quarterly consolidated revenue reached ₹58,539.1 crore, while capex totaled ₹13,386 crore.

3. Reliance Jio — 533.3 Million Subscribers

Reliance Jio reached 533.3 million connectivity subscribers in Q1 FY27, after adding 35.2 million customers over 12 months.

Jio’s 5G customer base has already reached 285 million, making it one of the world’s largest 5G operators.

The company also had 28.6 million fixed broadband connections, including 14 million AirFiber connections.

Jio carried 69.4 exabytes of data traffic during the quarter, while monthly per-capita consumption reached 43.7GB.

The combination of mobile and AirFiber shows how 5G fixed wireless access is extending telecom operators beyond traditional smartphone connectivity.

4. China Telecom — 442.43 Million Mobile Subscribers

China Telecom reported 442.43 million mobile subscribers at the end of June 2026.

Of these, 322.50 million were 5G network subscribers, giving China Telecom one of the highest 5G penetration rates among the world’s largest mobile operators.

The company also had 201.28 million wireline broadband subscribers.

China Telecom reported H1 revenue of RMB260.471 billion and capex of RMB32.4 billion as it continues investing in mobile, broadband, cloud and intelligent computing infrastructure.

5. América Móvil — 334.3 Million Wireless Subscribers

América Móvil had approximately 334.3 million wireless subscribers at the end of June 2026, making the Latin American telecom group one of the world’s five largest mobile operators by subscriber scale.

Its postpaid base reached 149.8 million.

During Q2, América Móvil added 3.5 million postpaid subscribers, led by Brazil with 1.5 million additions. Colombia added 250,000, Peru 173,000, Argentina 154,000 and Mexico 101,000.

The group also had 80.2 million fixed-line revenue-generating units, but these are excluded from this mobile ranking.

América Móvil’s position highlights the enormous scale of the Latin American wireless market.

6. MTN Group — 317.7 Million Customers

MTN Group reported 317.7 million customers across 19 markets at June 30, 2026.

More than 179 million customers were active data users, while network traffic increased nearly 23 percent to 14.3 petabytes.

MTN also had 70.8 million active Mobile Money users, demonstrating how its large mobile customer base provides a foundation for fintech and digital services.

The operator invested almost R20 billion in H1 capex to expand mobile networks, connect homes and modernize IT.

MTN’s scale demonstrates the growing importance of Africa’s mobile telecom market in global subscriber growth.

7. Orange — About 275.5 Million Mobile Accesses

Orange reported approximately 275.5 million mobile accesses excluding MVNOs at March 31, 2026, up from 256 million a year earlier.

The total included approximately 104.1 million contract mobile accesses and 171.4 million prepaid accesses.

Orange has a particularly large presence across Africa and the Middle East, where subscriber and mobile-data growth continues to outpace its mature European markets.

The region added 10 million mobile data customers in H1 2026, while Africa and Middle East revenue increased 13.9 percent.

Orange generated €20.9 billion in H1 revenue and invested €3.2 billion in eCAPEX.

8. China Unicom — 248.5 Million Disclosed 5G Subscribers

China Unicom presents a methodology challenge for a subscriber ranking because its headline operating data no longer provides a directly comparable traditional mobile subscriber figure.

At June 2026, China Unicom reported 1.3108 billion aggregate connectivity subscribers, but this included 772.608 million IoT terminal connections.

Using 1.31 billion would therefore incorrectly make China Unicom appear larger than China Mobile.

The cleanest disclosed consumer-network indicator is its 248.505 million 5G network subscribers, up from 241.997 million in March.

China Unicom is therefore included with a clear qualification rather than mixing hundreds of millions of IoT connections into the mobile ranking.

9. Vodafone Idea — 193.1 Million Subscribers

Vodafone Idea has returned to subscriber growth as investment in 4G and 5G networks starts improving its competitive position in India.

Vi’s total subscriber base increased to approximately 193.1 million in Q1 FY27, compared with 192.8 million in the previous quarter.

The improvement was significant because it represented Vodafone Idea’s first quarter of positive net subscriber growth since the Vodafone-Idea merger in 2018.

At the end of FY2026, Vi had 128.9 million 4G/5G subscribers and 135 million data subscribers.

The company is accelerating 4G and 5G network expansion as it attempts to narrow the network gap with Jio and Airtel.

Vodafone Idea’s inclusion also highlights India’s extraordinary position in the global telecom industry: three Indian operators — Airtel, Jio and Vi — appear among the world’s biggest mobile customer bases.

10. VEON — More Than 150 Million Connectivity Customers

VEON serves more than 150 million connectivity customers across five markets.

Its major telecom businesses include JazzWorld in Pakistan, Kyivstar in Ukraine, Beeline Kazakhstan and other emerging-market operations.

VEON is increasingly trying to generate more value from this connectivity base through digital platforms. Its digital-user base has expanded beyond its traditional connectivity customer base.

This makes VEON another example of the transition taking place among global telecom operators from pure connectivity providers toward broader digital-service companies.

Top Mobile Operators Show Asia’s Subscriber Dominance

The ranking reveals how dramatically the center of global mobile scale has shifted toward Asia and emerging markets.

China Mobile leads with 1.011 billion mobile subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with about 680.9 million customers and Jio with 533.3 million subscribers.

China Telecom follows with 442.43 million mobile subscribers, while América Móvil has 334.3 million wireless subscribers and MTN has 317.7 million customers.

Orange, China Unicom, Vodafone Idea and VEON complete the comparison, although differences in operator reporting mean some figures require qualification.

More importantly, operators are increasingly focusing on the quality and monetization of their subscriber bases rather than subscriber numbers alone.

China Mobile has 687 million 5G customers, China Telecom has 322.5 million 5G subscribers, Jio has 285 million 5G users, and Vodafone Idea is attempting to migrate more of its nearly 200 million subscribers toward 4G and 5G.

The next phase of global telecom competition will therefore depend on how successfully these operators convert their enormous customer bases into 5G adoption, higher data consumption, broadband, fintech, cloud, AI and digital-service revenue.
