MTN Group, in collaboration with Huawei, has launched the Technology Innovation Lab at MTN Group’s headquarters.
This initiative, initially announced during Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to deepen collaboration between the two entities, accelerating digital transformation and sustainable development across the continent.
The Technology Innovation Lab is poised to serve as a catalyst for digital progress in Africa, fostering cross-regional collaboration and stimulating the African digital ecosystem. Through the lab, MTN and Huawei seek to promote the rapid development, deployment, and adoption of cutting-edge innovative solutions across various sectors.
This initiative signifies MTN’s evolution beyond its traditional role as a telecoms operator, aiming to become a leading provider of comprehensive technology services. Research and development within the lab will focus on critical areas such as 5G and 5G-A technologies, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, FTTH, automation, and digital financial services — all essential components for Africa’s digital future.
Ralph Mupita, President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, expressed the company’s commitment to developing relevant and transformative solutions tailored to the African context. He emphasized that the lab represents a strategic investment in Africa’s future, aiming to catalyze the growth of the digital economy and empower communities.

Cao Ming, President of Huawei’s Wireless Solutions, reiterated Huawei’s commitment to collaborating with MTN to develop leading products and solutions for the African market. He emphasized the lab’s role in accelerating the development of Africa’s digital economy and building a more prosperous and sustainable continent.
The Technology Innovation Lab will serve as a hub for experimentation, demonstration, and skill-building. Accessible to MTNers, partners, and stakeholders through prior reservation, the lab underscores MTN and Huawei’s dedication to shaping Africa’s digital future and fostering innovation, digital inclusion, and economic progress.
