Internet subscribers in India up 2.1 percent to 22.86 million in March 2012

Telecom Lead India: Internet subscribers in India
increased from 22.39 million in December 2011 to 22.86 million in March 2012,
registering 2.10 percent growth.

 

Top 10 ISPs together hold 94.94 percent of the total
Internet subscriber base.

 

BSNL is leading the broadband market.

 

Reliance Communications and MTNL are in second and third
positions.

 

BSNL holds 55.32 percent of the market share with
reported subscriber base of 12.65 million Internet subscribers at the end of
Mar-12. Reliance is at second position (3.58 million) followed by MTNL (2.54
million).

 

While Bharti Airtel is in the fourth position, You
Broadband & Cable is the fifth largest broadband player in India.

 

Hathway Cable, Datacom, Tikona Digital Networks, Beam
Telecom, Tata Communications and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) are the other
leading broadband providers.

 

Top 10 ISPs together hold 94.94 percent of the total
Internet subscriber base.

 

Number of Broadband subscribers increased from 13.35
million in December 2011 to 13.81 million in March 2012, registering 3.44
percent growth and y-o-y growth of 16.18 percent.

 

Share of Broadband subscription in total Internet
subscription increased from 59.6 percent at the end of Dec-11 to 60.4 percent
at the end of March 2012.

 

85 percent of the Broadband subscribers are using Digital
Subscriber Line (DSL) technology.

 

448.89 million wireless subscribers have subscribed to
Data services, as reported by the wireless service providers.

 

The total Internet leased line customers stood at 51,227
in March 2012 as compared to 50,343 in December 2011, registering an increase of
about 1.76 percent.

 

There are 8123 Cyber Cafes in March 2012 as compared to
7585 in December 2011, registering an increase of 7.09 percent during the
quarter.

 

48.84 percent of total wireless subscribers base are
capable of Accessing Data Services/Internet at the end of March 2012 as against
48.26 percent at the end of previous quarter.
