Desmond Cheung, Chief Technology Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, said: “This collaboration reflects Indosat’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation, using AI to not only optimize performance, but also reduce emissions and energy use across our network.”

Key AI Initiatives and Strategic Focus:

AI-Driven Energy Optimization:

IOH has deployed Nokia’s Energy Efficiency solution, part of its Autonomous Networks portfolio, across its nationwide radio access network (RAN).

This solution uses AI and ML algorithms to analyze real-time traffic and automatically power down idle radio equipment during low-demand periods.

It includes intelligent thermal management to reduce network cooling energy requirements, contributing to greener operations.

Sustainability Through Automation:

The energy optimization project supports IOH’s commitment to environmental stewardship, helping reduce carbon emissions and energy costs without compromising network performance.

The deployment is in line with IOH’s ISO 50001 certification, marking it as the first Southeast Asian operator recognized for energy management excellence.

Rapid, Scalable Deployment via SaaS:

The AI-based solution is offered in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, minimizing capital expenditure and simplifying software updates and maintenance.

This enables fast deployment and multi-vendor integration, enhancing the agility of IOH’s network strategy.

Transition to AI TechCo:

This initiative is part of IOH’s broader journey from traditional telecom operations to a cloud-first, AI-powered enterprise, where automation and intelligence drive decision-making and infrastructure management.

Partnership with Nokia’s Autonomous Networks:

Nokia’s Autonomous Networks Fabric, powered by Agentic AI, supports IOH with real-time visibility, predictive analytics, and secure automation across heterogeneous networks.

It allows for holistic management of observability, analytics, and orchestration, ensuring the network operates as a unified adaptive system.

Geographic Expansion:

Following successful trials, the solution has been rolled out across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Central and East Java, targeting energy savings at scale across IOH’s Nokia RAN footprint.

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, which has 95.4 million subscribers, is leveraging AI not just for operational efficiency, but also to meet its sustainability goals. By using intelligent automation and cloud-native tools, IOH is positioning itself as a next-generation AI TechCo, setting benchmarks in digital transformation, environmental responsibility, and network innovation.

In the first half of 2024alone, Indosat invested approximately US$275 million, rolling out 22,000 new 4G base stations and over 100 5G base stations. By Q1 2025, the company’s capital expenditure was Rp 2.62 trillion, with more than 90 percent directed toward mobile network enhancement, raising the total number of 4G base stations to over 202,000 — an annual growth of about 10 percent.
