Grameenphone names Michael Foley as CEO

Telecom operator Grameenphone has appointed Michael Foley as the company’s CEO and Petter-B. Furberg as chairman.

Michael Foley is currently the CEO of Telenor Bulgaria. Petter-B. Furberg is the interim CEO of Grameenphone, the leading telecom operator in Bangladesh with 59 million mobile connections.

“Michael is taking on the challenge of leading Grameenphone through the next phases of digitisation in Bangladesh,” said Sigve Brekke, president and CEO of Telenor Group.

Michael Foley, who has been with Telenor Group since 2014, worked as the CEO of Telenor Bulgaria and CEO of Telenor Pakistan. Michael Foley is a Graduate of McGill University in Montreal with a BA in Organisational Psychology.

Telenor will be hiring a new CEO for Telenor Bulgaria. Sasa Filiopovic, currently the chief marketing officer (CMO) of Telenor Bulgaria, will serve as interim CEO.

Petter-B. Furberg, who has served as interim CEO of Grameenphone since October 2016, will be the chairman of Grameenphone. He will continue as head of the Emerging Markets Cluster in Asia. He also remains on the Telenor Group’s Executive Management Team.

Christopher Laska will step down as chairman of Grameenphone and continue in his role as senior vice president for Board Governance and Partnership Relations in Asia.
