COAI has welcomed the decision of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to allow the use of Aadhar e-KYC service for issuing SIM cards to mobile subscribers.

Besides ensuring security compliance and customer convenience, adoption of the e-KYC service in issuing new mobile connections will bring in more efficiency to the system.

“We firmly believe that the adoption of this process will make the subscriber verification process extremely robust and effective.

The simplicity of this system gives us reason to believe that it will benefit everyone — consumers, service providers and also TERM Cells and LEAs,” said Rajan Mathews, director general at COAI.

Adoption of an identification-based process will address the problem of fraudulent elements getting telephone connections on forged or fake documents. A biometric- or iris-based verification system will provide a foolproof method to eliminate such fraudulent activations.

Aadhar-based activation process will bring in process efficiency by supporting the infrastructure otherwise required for connecting millions of verified citizens.

Vodafone India has welcomed the Government’s decision to enable e-KYC using AADHAR. The e-KYC solution is an instant, secure and green mobile subscriber verification project, where a customer’s AADHAR card and fingerprints are adequate for both validating and activating new prepaid and postpaid connections.

Vodafone had partnered with the Department of Telecom (DoT) to pilot the AADHAR based e-KYC solutions in and test it successfully in two circles.

Sunil Sood, MD and CEO of Vodafone India, said: “For the consumer instant activation means a better experience and security of his personal confidential information. For Vodafone it will improve quality of sales as well as regulatory compliance.”
