Bangalore launches free WiFi hotspots in the heart of the city, more coming soon

Department of IT, BT, S & T of the Government of Karnataka has taken a major step in delivering connectivity to people in Bangalore by launching free Namma WiFi (802.11N) connectivity in six major locations at the heart of the city.

For this project, the state government has partnered with D-VoiS, a private Internet service provider. D-VoiS has previously set up WiFi hotspots in Mantri Square mall, Bangalore and Manipal University.

The service is available in commercial hotspots of Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brigade Road, Shanthi Nagar bus station, Yeshwantpur bus station, Koramangala bus station and on CMH Road Indiranagar in Bangalore city.

Namma WiFi will be extended to 10 more locations over a period of time. This initiative will benefit scores of people who visit these commercial hubs. The service can be accessed on laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

The service delivers speeds up to 512 Kbps. Usage will be limited to 3 hours per day or usage of up to 50 MB data. Total number of access points will be 23 in the coverage area. They can accommodate 2000 users at the same time.

Users need to just register their mobile number with the network. An authentication password will then be sent to the registered number.

To ensure security, the hotspots are secured with HD cameras.

The WiFi service will be powered by apps like the parking app, garbage app and the likes. The parking app can show the nearest slot for parking and the garbage app would tell you the nearest garbage throw away point. It already provides apps for locating nearest restaurants and location maps.
