Nigerian Telcos Launch $1bn Network Upgrade to Boost 4G, Prepare for 5G
Nigerian telecom operators have begun a $1 billion network upgrade using equipment from Chinese manufacturers to improve service quality. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed shipments started arriving in early June, with deployment ongoing to meet a year-end deadline. This investment more than doubles last year’s capital expenditure and follows a 50 percent tariff increase approved by the NCC to help operators manage rising costs. Operators are expanding 4G coverage and preparing for 5G deployment. The upgrades aim to reduce network congestion, improve call quality, and increase internet speeds for Nigeria’s 160 million telecom subscribers. Rural areas with limited coverage are also targeted. This infrastructure upgrade supports Nigeria’s digital economy by enabling broader broadband penetration.

Sarawak’s SMART Project Boosts Internet Coverage to Over 90 percent with Innovative Tower Network
The SMART project in Sarawak has completed 582 out of 618 telecommunications towers, reaching 90.2 percent internet coverage. Of these, 481 towers are operational, providing Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) and 4G services through Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology. The remaining towers are expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The project uses MOCN technology, allowing multiple operators to share infrastructure, reducing costs and speeding coverage. It also uses fixed wireless access (FWA) and WiFi Saluran to provide internet to rural and suburban households. The MySRBN initiative delivers fixed wireless broadband to underserved areas, supporting e-learning, small businesses, telemedicine, and digital public services.
MTN Ghana Data Glitch Disrupts Launch of New 15% Bonus Offer
On July 1, 2025, MTN Ghana faced a data glitch that disrupted the rollout of its new 15 percent bonus on data bundles. Customers experienced difficulties purchasing data bundles during the launch, affecting the promotion’s availability. MTN acknowledged the problem and said its technical teams were working to restore service as soon as possible. The glitch happened during the introduction of the bonus offer, which was part of a regulatory directive requiring telecom companies to increase data volumes without raising prices. MTN reassured customers that the issue would be resolved quickly and normal service would resume. This incident highlights the challenges telecom companies encounter when upgrading systems to implement new offers and meet regulatory demands.
