Telia is strengthening its commitment to sustainability by embedding renewable energy deeper into its network operations — most notably in Estonia, where Telia has become the first telecom operator in the country to equip nearly 25 percent of its mobile masts with solar parks.
The initiative, led by Telia Estonia and developed in partnership with renewable energy company Sunly, involves solar units ranging from 10 to 20 kilowatts in capacity, installed across the country under a 15-year agreement. These solar parks are expected to generate around 1.5 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually — enough to power 10 million kilometers of driving in an electric vehicle, according to Telia Estonia’s Network Manager Mihkel Kõiv.
This investment enhances both the environmental and operational resilience of Telia’s mobile infrastructure. By integrating localized renewable power, Telia not only cuts emissions but also improves energy self-sufficiency, especially in rural and remote areas.
This move complements Telia’s commitment across all its markets, where its networks have been powered by 100 percent renewable energy since 2020. By increasing the share of solar energy in its energy mix, Telia is not only improving sustainability but also boosting the flexibility and reliability of its energy supply.
Looking ahead, Telia plans to integrate smart energy management and storage technologies to optimize the use of captured solar power. These efforts align with the Group’s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Already, Telia has cut absolute emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 80 percent since 2018.
Beyond its internal operations, Telia sees its digital services as key enablers of a net-zero economy, helping businesses and societies transition to more efficient, low-carbon models through connectivity and digitalization.
