America Movil Capex reaches $6.04 billion in 2013 third quarter

Latin American telecom operator America Movil on Friday said its capital expenditure (Capex) reached $6.04 billion (78.7 billion pesos) in the 2013 third quarter.

The mobile service provider, which recently dropped plans to acquire Dutch telecoms KPN, said third quarter revenue rose 0.7 percent to 194.221 billion pesos.

The revenue growth was primarily driven by gains from selling more expensive mobile phones, which offset a drop in revenue as customers made fewer calls.

The company, controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim, said profit in the July-September period dropped 46 percent to 16.384 billion pesos ($1.25 billion), from 30.45 billion pesos in the same period a year earlier.

America Movil said its core profit, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, fell 5.8 percent to 63.3 billion pesos.

Almost half of the company’s core profit comes from Mexico, where service revenues, or income from customers’ phone calls, dropped 1.4 percent.

Country-wise revenue growth

The South American block’s service revenues rose 8.9 percent and those of Central America and The Caribbean 4.9 percent. Mexico revenue dropped 2.1 percent due to weak business conditions.

Mobile data

Mobile data and PayTV revenues expanded 22.4 percent and 21.7 percent respectively. Fixed data revenues rose 10.2 percent. Mobile and fixed-line voice revenues were off by 2.2 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.
