Airtel unveils new international roaming call rates for South Asia

Telecom Lead India: India’s leading telecommunications
company Bharti Airtel has jumped into the bandwagon of low roaming call rates
with the introduction of new Airtel South Asia rates for its mobile customers
in India traveling to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Under these new roaming rates, Airtel mobile customers
can enjoy call rates as low as Rs 1 travelling to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Airtel will charge Rs 10/min for incoming calls from its postpaid and
prepaid customers.

Recently, Matrix cellular reduced international roaming
rates up to 50 percent this summer.

Matrix Cellular said people travelling to U.K. this
summer can now call back home for Re 1 per minute. They can also receive free
incoming calls. The rate cut is happening at a time when the European Union
decided to slash mobile roaming rates.

European Union reaches pact to lower mobile roaming fees

Recently, the European Commission, European lawmakers and
governments also agreed to reduce mobile roaming fees. The European Parliament
is expected to approve the deal in May.

The deal is expected to be in effect by July and will
allow consumers to pay less for calls, texts and mobile Web services when
travelling abroad, in a measure that could hit telecom industry profits.
Telecom major Vodafone supported the deal and creation of a more
competitive market for roaming instead of price caps even as some of its peers
lobbied against it.

After the approval, more global service provider such as
Vodafone and Airtel will slash their international roaming call rates and allow
customers to pay less for calls, texts and mobile Web services.

Earlier, Bharti Airtel also introduced an unlimited
international data roaming plan in Asia Pacific for its post-paid mobile
users.

Airtel post-paid mobile customers will benefit significantly
from unlimited data roaming at Rs 500 (approximately $10) a day for their
travels within the Asia Pacific region.

Airtel has 176.95 million telecom subscribers. Around 5
percent of its subscribers are post-paid users.
