Telecom Industry Could Lose $1.4 Trillion Due to Spectrum Shortage

A report by Accenture, for CTIA, says the U.S. could lose $1.4 trillion in economic growth over the next 10 years because there isn’t enough spectrum. Without enough spectrum, wireless networks won’t keep up with rising demand for mobile data. By 2027, a quarter of data traffic will be unmet, and by 2035, it could be three-quarters. This shortage could also slow progress in technologies like artificial intelligence. The U.S. has less mid-band spectrum than other countries, which could hurt 5G development. To avoid problems like slower speeds and dropped calls, the U.S. needs more 5G spectrum. Experts say investing in it is necessary to keep up with demand and stay ahead in technology.
