Telecom Italia, NSN test HSUPA 16QAM, achieving uplink data speeds of up to 11 Mbps

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) today said Telecom Italia tested its new HSUPA 16QAM (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology in its lab environment in the northern Italian city of Turin, achieving uplink data speeds of up to 11 Mbps.

In combination with NSN advanced receivers, the solution can double the peak data rate and significantly increase the network capacity.

NSN’s HSUPA solution with 16QAM modulation increases the speed in the uplink, enabling mobile users to upload photos and videos to social media and cloud services more quickly. The devices supporting HSUPA 16QAM are already available on the market.

Telecom Italia has already deployed NSN’s Interference Cancellation receivers that reduce interferences caused by high bit rate users, raising uplink throughput by up to 50 percent and extending the device’s battery life.

Sandro Dionisi, director of Telecom Italia Lab

NSN said the Frequency Domain Equalizer achieves an average of 10 percent to 20 percent gain in uplink throughput, and when combined with the HSUPA 16QAM solution, increase the peak uplink rate two-fold.

Sandro Dionisi, director of Telecom Italia’s Lab, said: “The results prove that this technology is effective in increasing uplink data speeds which results in a superior smartphone experience for our broadband customers, especially when they post materials and updates online.”
