STC deploys Nokia’s AI-powered MantaRay cognitive SON in network

STC has deployed the MantaRay Cognitive SON, an AI-driven self-organizing network solution, in its commercial network for the first time, according to Nokia.

STC Jawwy brand

MantaRay SON is a leading network optimization and automation platform that leverages self-configuring modules to enhance network performance and efficiency. It is designed for customization to optimize specific software applications and address unique operational challenges. Cognitive SON, an AI-powered feature of MantaRay SON, enables autonomous RAN (Radio Access Network) operations. Nokia developed a tailored solution for STC.

During a period of high traffic, Cognitive SON was implemented and processed over 10,000 actions, resulting in a 30 percent increase in utilization rates on loaded cells and a 10% average improvement in user throughput. Despite a 40 percent rise in traffic, STC’s network maintained consistent connectivity. The autonomous RAN operations also reduced manual work and improved network quality.

The development of this AI-powered network module expands STC’s suite of advanced AI solutions, accelerating digital transformation and enabling sustainable growth. It enhances radio network energy efficiency, achieving a 13% reduction in energy consumption across STC’s 4G and 5G networks in 2023. By 2025, STC’s AI-powered products are expected to cover over 200 systems, enabling further cost efficiencies.

Haithem Al Faraj, Chief Technology Officer at STC Group, stated: “This technology not only minimizes human error and improves quality but also allows networks to operate autonomously and efficiently, while humans remain essential in guiding and maximizing the outcomes from machine learning.”

Mikko Lavanti, Head of MEA at Nokia, commented: “This AI-driven innovation has redefined standards for network performance, ensuring robust and consistent service for customers even during peak usage periods.”
