Qualcomm leads in smartphone apps processor market in Q2 2011

Chip major Qualcomm is leading the smartphone apps processor revenue market in Q2 2011. Qualcomm took more than 51 percent revenue share in the smartphone applications processor market in Q2 2011.

In Q2 2011, Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Marvell and NVIDIA featured in the top-five smartphone applications processor share rankings in terms of both unit shipments and revenue. Despite its OMAP apps processor product strength, Texas Instruments fell to number three, behind Qualcomm and Samsung, reflecting weakness at the core of Nokia, its major customer.

Qualcomm gained 50 percent revenue share in Q2 2011 on the strength of its dominant market position in the Android ecosystem and Snapdragon processor momentum. Strategy Analytics estimates that Qualcomm applications processors powered over 60 percent of the Android smartphones shipped in Q2 2011,” said Stuart Robinson, Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service.

In contrast, Qualcomm competitors Broadcom and ST-Ericsson so far failed to capitalize on smartphone growth in order to build a strong position in the applications processor market, despite their similar integrated approach,” Robinson added.

Despite the ongoing strategy transitions at major OEMs such as Nokia and RIM, the global smartphone applications processor market showed 65 percent year-over-year growth in Q2 2011, reaching $1.7 billion, according to Strategy Analytics.

Dual-core processors accounted for 14 percent of total smartphone applications processors shipped in Q2 2011, which helped vendors such as NVIDIA and Samsung move up in rankings,” said Sravan Kundojjala, senior analyst.

Strategy Analytics foresees dual-core processors helping the overall applications processors market to maintain healthy average selling prices (ASPs) and sustaining revenue growth in years to come,” Kundojjala added.

In Q1 2011, revenue for global smartphone applications processors registered a 108 percent year-over-year growth to reach $1.68 billion. Competitive dynamics in the smartphone OEM and OS landscape continue to influence applications processor vendor fortunes and this is clearly reflected in the Q1 2011 rankings.
