Huawei leads GPON market in Brazil, Russia, India, China in 2012: Infonetics

Huawei is leading 2.5G Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) market in Brazil, Russia, India, China (BRIC) markets in 2012, Infonetics Research said.

The other important GPON players include ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent and Fibrehome.

The GPON equipment market reached $1.4 billion in 2012 — all from 2.5G GPON — in the BRIC countries.

On the 10G GPON front, according to Infonetics Research, only minimal trial deployments are expected in China until 2014 at the earliest, and even later in other countries.

Its research note says Russia is the most active BRIC market in terms of new FTTH subscribers.

2.5G GPON equipment revenue will grow the strongest in India over the next 5 years (2012-2017 CAGR of 8 percent), though it is a tiny market compared to China, Russia and Brazil.

Infonetics’ report does not talk about growth drivers for GPON in India.

While, Huawei is the 2.5G GPON revenue share leader in all 4 BRIC countries, ZTE is the only other vendor with a presence in every BRIC nation.

Huawei leads in GPON in BRIC markets

In the all-important BRIC countries, China dominates GPON equipment spending, accounting for nearly 90 percent of the market.

“There’s a dichotomy between China and the other BRIC nations, especially Russia and Brazil, where growth is solid but dwarfed by the numbers by China. Take rates in Russia and Brazil have been better than in China,” said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst — broadband access and pay TV at Infonetics Research.

Meanwhile, Ovum earlier said ZTE was the world’s leading vendor with 42 percent market share in PON (passive optical networking) optical line terminals (OLTs) in 2012, after the company shipped 1.72 million lines. ( With 42% market share ZTE leads world PON market: Ovum )

Based on Ovum’s data, ZTE ranked first globally in shipments of optical network terminals (ONTs) and optical network units (ONUs) with 32 percent market share, after the company achieved shipments of more than 13 million lines.

Ovum’s data showed that ZTE attained market leadership while the total number of OLT ports shipped declined between 2011 and 2012.
