Ciena revenue dips 3.8% in Q1 FY12

Telecom Lead America: Ciena Corporation revenue declined
3.8 percent to of $416.7 million for Q1 FY12, against $433.3 million for Q1,
FY11.

Ciena’s net loss for the fiscal first quarter 2012 was
$47.7 million, against net loss of $79.1 million for the fiscal first quarter
2011.

The company earned $266.3 million revenue from its
packet-optical transport segment, $43.4 million from packet-optical switching
segment, $21.9 million from carrier-Ethernet solutions and $85.1 million from
software and services in Q1 FY12.

For Q1 FY12, the company’s operating expense $198.9
million, against $ 206.2 for Q1 FY11, decreased by 17.9 percent.

Our first quarter revenue reflects the combined effects
of seasonality and longer customer deployment and revenue recognition cycles as
a result of our greater mix of international and solutions-oriented sales,”
said Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena.

Ciena expects revenue in the range of $435 to $460
million for fiscal second quarter 2012.

However, our first quarter revenue does not reflect the
underlying strength of the business and ongoing customer demand. We expect sequential
revenue growth in the fiscal second quarter, and we anticipate that our
operating results for the second half of fiscal 2012 will be stronger than the
first half,” Smith added.

Ciena’s non-U.S. customers contributed 44 percent of
total revenue.

The company’s cash and investments totaled $600.7 million
and cash flow from operations totaled $12.9 million.

Ciena’s free cash flow totaled $5.0 million and
inventories totaled $248.7 million, including, raw materials: $43.5 million,
work in process: $17.7 million, finished goods: $146.9 million, deferred cost
of sales: $76.2 million and reserve for excess and obsolescence: $(35.6)
million.

At the end of Q1 FY12, the company’s headcount totaled
4,386.

solutions featuring advanced optical technologies that include 40G, OTN
switching and directionless ROADMs.
