Broadcom expands portfolio for carriers and cable operators

Broadcom announced two new Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD) system-on-chip (SoC) devices that integrate the advanced Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) 2.0 standard for cable home networking.

The new BCM7448S and BCM7449S chips for connected home gateways and IP clients add to the company’s portfolio of more than 40 MoCA-enabled SoCs and mark a milestone for shipping more than 100 million devices with this technology.

The chips support multiple Ultra HD video compression standards for operators and manufacturers to cost-effectively deliver the widest variety of 4K content to home subscribers. They are compatible for upgrade with Broadcom’s BCM74XX series Ultra HD chips.

John H. Gleiter, Broadcom  vice president of Marketing, Broadband & Connectivity Group, said, “Our latest generation of home gateway and IP client chips with integrated MoCA 2.0 and multi-standard video compression now allow carriers to further enhance their value and deploy the highest-quality Ultra HD services to subscribers.”

BCM7448S and BCM7449S support High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) standard and Google VP9 technology. Both standards reduce the delivered bitrate for comparable video quality by approximately 50 percent.

Broadcom’s BCM7448S and BCM7449S are currently sampling.

In another related development, Broadcom announced first upstream diagnostic analyzer technology for cable operators.

The new solution extends Broadcom’s downstream Full Band Capture remote diagnostic tools to upstream analysis. It helps cable operators reduce operator costs and improve customer service through remote diagnostics for network connectivity, the company said.

The new offering will help cable multi-system operators (MSOs) remotely detect and locate upstream noise sources in real time, enabling proactive diagnosis and resolution of subscriber’s network connectivity issues without costly service calls or truck rolls, the company said.

Broadcom’s new upstream diagnostic analyzer technology is supported in Broadcom’s portfolio of DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 products. It is available on Broadcom’s portfolio of currently shipping cable gateway silicon products.
