Sony Mobile ships 10 million smartphones in second quarter of 2013 fiscal

Sony Mobile has shipped 10 million smartphones in the second quarter of fiscal 2013 against 9.6 million in first quarter, the devices major said on Thursday.

During the second quarter of fiscal 2012, Sony smartphone shipment was 8.8 million compared with 7.4 million in the first quarter of last year.

Sony Mobile said its mobile products and communications business posted 39.3 percent growth in revenue to 418.6 billion yen in Q2 fiscal 2013.

The revenue growth was primarily due to forex changes, increase in unit sale of smartphone and increase in average selling price of smartphones.

Meanwhile, Sony has cut its full-year profit targets and posted a net loss 19.3 billion yen ($196.65 million) for the September quarter as its struggling TV operation fell back into the red.

Sony TV operation flipped from a 5.2 billion yen operating profit in the first quarter to a 9.3 billion yen loss.

Its operating profit forecast for the year to next March was cut to 170 billion yen from 230 billion yen.

Sony also cut its full-year goal for TV sales, but chief financial officer Masaru Kato said the company was sticking to its target of a full-year profit for its electronics division.
