MediaTek’s main rival Qualcomm is the leader in the premium AI smartphone market.

MediaTek’s Dimensity 8400 chipset features an eight-core Arm Cortex-A725 processor clocking up to 3.25GHz. The chipset for premium 5G smartphones offers a 41 percent boost in multi-core performance and a 44 percent reduction in peak power use compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300.

Enhanced gaming experiences are supported by the Arm Mali-G720 GPU, which provides 24 percent higher peak performance and 42 percent greater power efficiency. Gaming is further optimized with MediaTek Frame Rate Converter (MFRC) and Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT) 3.0 for smoother and more responsive gameplay.

The chipset features the MediaTek NPU 880, enabling Gen-AI applications like translation, rewriting, contextual replies, AI recording, and media generation. MediaTek’s Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) facilitates the development of agentic AI applications that adapt to user preferences. It also incorporates the MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP with QPD remosaic technology for superior image and video capabilities, including HDR recording across the zoom range.

Additional highlights include a 5G-A modem supporting up to 3CC-CA and 5.17Gbps speeds, Network Observation System (NOS) for seamless 5G/Wi-Fi switching, and support for WQHD+ displays up to 144Hz with dual-screen functionality.

The chipset leader said smartphones featuring the Dimensity 8400 are expected by the end of 2024.
