Verizon Settles $175 mn Wireless Patent Dispute with Headwater

Verizon agreed to settle a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Headwater Research after a $175 million jury verdict in July. The settlement details were filed under seal in a Texas federal court. Headwater accused Verizon of infringing its wireless communication patents through mobile phones, tablets, and cellular networks. The technology in question improves data usage efficiency, reduces network congestion, lowers power consumption, and enhances connectivity. Headwater, founded by inventor Gregory Raleigh, said it shared its proprietary technology with Verizon between 2009 and 2011 under a non-disclosure agreement. Verizon denied wrongdoing and challenged the validity of the patents. Headwater previously won a $279 million verdict against Samsung and settled similar claims with AT&T and T-Mobile. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Reuters news report said.

Telefonica Extends Huawei 5G Contract in Spain Until 2030

Telefonica has renewed its 5G contract with Huawei in Spain until 2030, covering the 5G core for its retail network. The agreement, signed in late 2024, ensures Huawei continues supplying equipment for consumer services. In early 2025, Telefonica awarded Nokia a separate 5G core contract for enterprise and government services, creating a dual-vendor strategy. Telefonica’s leadership confirmed the company is reducing reliance on Huawei in line with European Union guidance, though Spain has not imposed a ban on Huawei, Reuters news report said.
