India Approves Starlink for Satellite Internet
The Indian government has approved SpaceX’s Starlink to offer satellite internet services. Starlink has agreements with Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio. The approval follows discussions on spectrum allocation. Starlink has been waiting for approval since 2022 due to national security concerns. The approval will help develop satellite internet in India, CNBC-TV18 reports.
Telecom Italia and Iliad May Work Together
Telecom Italia and Iliad are talking about joining to improve telecom services in Italy. They need approval from European officials. Telecom Italia has a new main investor, Poste Italiane. Poste will buy mobile services from Telecom Italia. They may also work together on payments and online services.
SK Telecom Could Lose $5 Billion If Termination Fees Are Waived
SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang said the company could lose up to $5 billion if it waives termination fees for users switching carriers. The loss could come from 5 million customers leaving the service. Ryu said 2.5 million users could leave if the fees are waived. Each user typically pays 100,000 won in fees, adding up to 250 billion won. A committee will be set up to rebuild trust with customers. The Ministry of Science and ICT is reviewing the situation, and results from an investigation are expected in two months.
NTT to Buy NTT Data for $16.4 Billion
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) plans to buy the remaining shares of NTT Data for $16.4 billion. The offer is 4,000 yen per share. NTT owns 57.7 percent of NTT Data. The deal follows NTT’s 2020 acquisition of NTT Docomo. NTT is working with Toyota on a mobility platform and developing light-based communication technology. The company is also expanding its data centers.
ATIS Group to Buy Lati Paraguay from Millicom
ATIS Group will buy 300 wireless towers in Paraguay from Millicom. This deal helps ATIS grow in Latin America. ATIS and Tigo Paraguay will also work together on a lease agreement to support Tigo’s network. Since being bought by Towerco Investments in 2022, ATIS has grown from 185 sites in Argentina to over 1,000 across the region.
Jio Leads Subscriber Growth in India
In March 2025, Jio added 2.17 million wireless and 0.14 million wireline subscribers. Airtel added 1.25 million wireless and 0.068 million wireline subscribers. BSNL added 49,000 wireless subscribers. Jio continues to grow its market share in India, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
