NTT Docomo aims to deploy a 5G network using currently available equipment. Fujitsu is supporting the deployment of a 5G network that can develop areas with the flexibility to simultaneously operate with 3G, LTE, and LTE-Advanced networks.

This will be primarily through changes to software, with the minimum number of hardware changes necessary to support 5G, using Fujitsu’s existing base station for 3G, LTE, and LTE-Advanced radio access technologies.

In addition to providing 5G base stations, Fujitsu will implement its software-defined radio (SDR) technology to enable different radio access technologies for the same hardware, to expand the functionality of software on existing base stations.

Meanwhile, Intel announced its partnership with NTT Docomo to provide 5G technologies supporting network infrastructure, connectivity and collaboration on new experiences for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Intel’s 5G technologies, modems and infrastructure platforms will help telecom operators to develop gigabit connectivity, new mobility solutions, more immersive viewership experiences, smart city applications and advanced broadcasting services, said Aicha Evans, senior vice president and chief strategy officer at Intel Corporation.

Intel earlier said its association with KT, a telecom operator in Korea, to deliver the Winter Olympics’ largest broad-scale 5G network – including over 22 5G links at 10 sites delivering 3,800 terabytes of network capacity.
