Jio challenges Idea, Vodafone and Airtel for dominance in India telecom market

Wireless additons in November 2017 India TRAIThe latest wireless statistics released by TRAI shows the emerging dominance of Reliance Jio in the Indian telecom market.

Reliance Jio has become the fourth largest telecom operator in all the telecom circles across India and reached third rank in some circles — in less than 15 months since beginning its 4G operations in September 2016.

Airtel has 27.233 million subscribers in Andhra Pradesh followed by Idea Cellular with 16.522 million and Reliance Jio with 12.634 million.

Vodafone has 20.384 million wireless subscribers in Gujarat followed by Idea Cellular with 13.169 million and Reliance Jio with 11.012 million. Reliance Jio has displaced Bharti Airtel from the third rank. Airtel has 9.714 million mobile customers in Gujarat, making it for the fourth spot. Gujarat is the home town of Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire promoter of Reliance Industries (RIL) and Reliance Jio.

Idea Cellular has 28.071 million wireless subscribers in Maharashtra circle excluding Mumbai metro followed by Vodafone India with 19.89 million, Bharti Airtel with 14.761 million and Reliance Jio with 10.902 million.

Airtel has 19.853 million mobile subscribers in Tamil Nadu including Chennai followed by Vodafone with 16.533 million and Reliance Jio with 10.102 million. Idea Cellular, which has the fourth rank, has 5.923 million mobile customers in Tamil Nadu.

Bharti Airtel has nearly 6.729 million wireless customers in Assam, followed by Vodafone with 3.782 million, Reliance Jio with 2.653 million and Idea Cellular with 1.139 million subscribers. Idea has lost its fourth rank to Reliance Jio in Assam.

Airtel has 31.355 million phone customers in Bihar, followed by Idea Cellular with 11.954 million,
Vodafone with 9.511 million and Reliance Jio with 9.463 million subscribers. Reliance Jio is very close to Vodafone in Bihar. Airtel is a dominant player in Bihar.

Bharti Airtel continues to lead the Delhi telecom circle with 12.572 million subscribers, followed by Vodafone India with 11.375 million, Reliance Jio with 8.987 million and Idea Cellular with 6.650 million. Idea Cellular, a late entrant, lost its third rank to Reliance Jio in Delhi.

Vodafone India is the leading telecom operator in Haryana with 6.159 million wireless subscribers, followed by Idea Cellular with 5.012 million, Reliance Jio with 4.017 million and Airtel with 3.909 million. Airtel has lost the third rank to Reliance Jio.

Bharti Airtel continues to lead the Himachal Pradesh telecom circle with 3.315 million phone users, while Reliance Jio has emerged as the second largest operator with 1.632 million users. On the other hand, Idea Cellular has 0.857 million and Vodafone has 0.602 million customers.

Reliance Jio has become the second largest operator with 1.800 million subscribers in Jammu & Kashmir against market leader Airtel’s 4.061 million. Vodafone has 0.881 million and Idea Cellular has 0.573 million phone customers in the in Jammu & Kashmir telecom circle.

Vodafone has lost its third rank to Reliance Jio in the Karnataka circle including Bangalore. Vodafone has 7.691 million customers. Airtel is the market leader with 24.098 million wireless customers in the Karnataka circle. Idea Cellular has 9.213 million and Reliance Jio has 8.864 million customers in Karnataka.

Airtel management team has reasons to worry in Kerala. Airtel has just given up its third spot to Jio.  Idea Cellular is the leading operator in Kerala with 11.488 million customers, while Vodafone has 7.875 million, Reliance Jio has 4.92 million and Airtel has 4.819 million.

Vodafone, Airtel and Reliance Jio have 5 million plus each in Kolkata. Idea Cellular lost its third rank to Jio in Kolkata. Vodafone has 5.930 million subscribers in Kolkata followed by Airtel with 5.549 million, Reliance Jio with 5.079 million and Idea Cellular with 2.394 million.

Idea Cellular with 25.85 million wireless subscribers is the dominant mobile operator in Madhya Pradesh, followed by Airtel with 14.950 million, Reliance Jio with 9.19 million and Vodafone with 6.491 million.

Bharti Airtel is not in a strong position in Mumbai as Reliance Jio has already grabbed 7.340 million customers against Airtel’s 7.518 million. Vodafone with 9.426 million subscribers is the undisputed leader in Mumbai. Idea Cellular has 4.363 million customers in Mumbai.

North East circles are dominated by Airtel with 4.378 million subscribers, followed by Vodafone with 1.567 million, Reliance Jio with 1.318 million and Idea Cellular with 0.488 million.

Airtel has 11.973 million subscribers in Orissa whereas Vodafone has 4.276 million, Reliance Jio has 4.034 million and Idea Cellular has 1.703 million.

Airtel is dominating the Punjab telecom circle with 9.816 million users, followed by Idea Cellular with 7.346 million, Reliance Jio with 6.975 million and Vodafone with 5.012 million.

Airtel is the true leader in Rajasthan with 21.666 million subscribers. Vodafone with 11.640 million,
Reliance Jio with 8.340 million and Idea Cellular 7.732 million are in the next positions.

Airtel continues its top position in U.P. (E) with 25.208 million subscribers against Vodafone’s 22.081 million, Idea Cellular’s 11.694 million and Reliance Jio’s 9.517 million.

Idea Cellular is leading U.P. (W) with 16.238 million wireless subscribers, followed by Vodafone with 12.273 million, Airtel with 9.140 million and Reliance Jio with 7.740 million.

Idea Cellular management needs to worry about Reliance in West Bengal. Idea Cellular has 5.673 million as compared with Reliance Jio’s mobile phone customer base of 5.5400 million in West Bengal. Vodafone India dominates West Bengal with 20.88 million, while Airtel has 16.907 million customers.
