Verizon Secures 80+ Million Miles of Corning Fiber in Multi-Billion-Dollar Deal, Targets 40–50 Million Passings

Verizon is significantly expanding its fiber business through a multi-billion-dollar supply agreement with Corning covering more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and connectivity solutions.

The agreement, running from 2027 through 2032, will support Verizon’s expansion toward 40–50 million broadband passings while providing high-capacity fiber for 5G transport, businesses and long-haul connections between AI data centers.

The scale of the deal indicates that fiber is becoming a central part of Verizon’s network strategy rather than simply an extension of its Fios home broadband business.

According to the Verizon-Corning fiber supply agreement, the companies are extending a relationship spanning 30 years, with Corning supplying fiber, cable and connectivity products for Verizon’s broadband and AI infrastructure expansion.

Verizon Targets 40–50 Million Fiber Passings

The Corning agreement arrives as Verizon substantially increases the scale of its fiber deployment.

Verizon has more than 30 million fiber passings following its acquisition of Frontier Communications, completed in January 2026. The combined footprint has transformed Verizon from a predominantly regional Fios operator into a much broader U.S. fiber provider.

Verizon plans to add at least 2 million fiber passings during 2026 and has set a medium-term target of 40–50 million passings.

That represents a major acceleration from Verizon’s earlier plans. In 2024, the operator expected the combined Verizon-Frontier operation to eventually reach 35–40 million fiber passings, while Verizon’s standalone Fios construction target for 2025 was up to 650,000 passings annually.

After integrating Frontier, Verizon has substantially raised that ambition.

Verizon’s expanded fiber network covers 31 states and Washington, D.C., providing a much larger addressable market for bundled mobile and fixed broadband services.

Frontier Acquisition Changes Verizon’s Fiber Scale

The Frontier acquisition is critical to understanding why Verizon needs such a large volume of optical fiber.

Frontier added millions of fiber locations to Verizon’s existing Fios footprint. The combination immediately increased Verizon’s fiber reach to approximately 30 million homes and businesses.

Verizon now plans to build aggressively from that base rather than simply operate the acquired network.

Moving from more than 30 million passings toward 40–50 million could eventually add another 10–20 million locations to Verizon’s addressable fiber market.

Fiber also creates an important cross-selling opportunity. Verizon has indicated that wireless penetration in many Frontier markets remains relatively low, allowing it to sell mobile services to fiber customers and fiber broadband to existing Verizon wireless subscribers.

One Fiber Network for Broadband, 5G and Enterprises

The Corning agreement is particularly important because Verizon is not building separate fiber networks for different applications.

Its strategy is based on a single converged architecture connecting residential neighborhoods, businesses, cell towers and enterprise data centers to the same high-capacity backbone.

This allows one fiber investment to support multiple revenue streams.

Fiber-to-the-home provides residential broadband revenue, while the same infrastructure can carry 5G backhaul and enterprise traffic. Long-haul sections of the network can additionally provide high-capacity connectivity to cloud and AI customers.

Verizon continues to invest in Fixed Wireless Access rather than treating fiber and FWA as competing technologies. In February 2026, Verizon said it had more than 5.7 million FWA subscribers, after adding approximately 1.2 million during 2025.

The combination gives Verizon several broadband options: fiber in markets where construction economics are attractive and 5G FWA where wireless infrastructure provides a more efficient route to customers.

Verizon Fiber Expansion Moves Into AI Infrastructure

AI represents the second major opportunity behind the Corning agreement.

Generative AI infrastructure requires extremely high-capacity connections between data centers because large AI models and distributed computing clusters move enormous volumes of information between facilities.

Verizon’s AI Connect strategy aims to capture part of this demand by using ultra-dense fiber cables along major long-haul corridors.

The Corning supply agreement therefore serves two markets simultaneously: FTTH broadband expansion and AI data-center connectivity.

Verizon says cell towers, enterprise data centers and residential neighborhoods can ultimately connect into the same high-capacity network.

This network-sharing model could improve the economics of Verizon’s fiber investment because infrastructure initially constructed for consumer broadband or mobile transport could also support enterprise and hyperscaler traffic.

80+ Million Miles Shows Scale of Verizon’s Network Plan

Corning will provide more than 80 million miles of fiber between 2027 and 2032, an unusually large volume that highlights the scale of Verizon’s planned network construction.

One technology involved is Corning Contour Flow Cable, a flexible ribbon cable designed to fit significantly more optical fiber into existing conduit pathways.

Increasing fiber density is particularly valuable on heavily used backbone routes because Verizon can expand capacity without necessarily constructing equivalent amounts of new conduit.

The agreement will also support Corning’s continued expansion of its U.S. manufacturing footprint, giving Verizon greater supply certainty as demand for optical infrastructure rises from telecom networks and AI data centers.

Fiber Becomes a Core Verizon Growth Platform

Verizon’s fiber strategy is now considerably larger than traditional Fios broadband.

The key numbers illustrate that transition: 80+ million miles of Corning fiber, a multi-billion-dollar commitment covering 2027–2032, more than 30 million existing fiber passings, at least 2 million new passings planned in 2026, and a medium-term target of 40–50 million passings.

Verizon is effectively positioning fiber as a common infrastructure layer supporting home broadband, enterprise connectivity, 5G transport and AI data centers.

That makes the Corning agreement more than a fiber procurement contract. It provides Verizon with the physical infrastructure needed to turn its enlarged post-Frontier footprint into a national convergence platform while simultaneously pursuing the rapidly growing connectivity requirements of AI hyperscalers.
