Telecom network operator Telenor India today announced that it gained from the modernization of 10,000 or 40 percent of its network sites in 6 circles.
Telenor India is planning to complete the entire modernization of 25,000 network sites by Q1 2017. Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei is assisting Telenor India to deploy equipment to make them future ready – offering better quality of coverage with higher spectral efficiency.
The Indian telecom operator claims that it achieved 25 percent energy efficiency and increased data throughput by 20 percent.
“This is the fastest upgrade on a live network in the telecom industry with nearly 50 sites being swapped in a day,” said Sharad Mehrotra, CEO of Telenor (India) Communications.
The modernized sites have deployed Lean GSM solution that improves the network capacity by nearly 25 percent using the same spectrum resources.
“This is a step towards becoming a preferred partner in the digital journey of our mass market customers. We are becoming future ready and this project will enable us to launch relevant services on any technology,” said Tanveer Mohammad, chief operating officer, Telenor India.
At the sites which have been migrated to new technology, Telenor has seen an increase in voice and data traffic. The network congestion has reduced and data throughput has increased resulting in improved network experience for its customers. In addition, the new equipment consumes up to 30 percent less power — contributing to the Green efforts of Telenor.
Telenor India has clocked first quarter revenue of NOK 1,520 million (+7 percent). Telenor India made an operating loss of NOK 3,100 million — impacted by NOK 2.9 billion in impairment and write-down. Telenor India’s operating loss in 2015 was NOK 990 million on revenue of NOK 5,592 million.
Telenor India added 1.526 million mobile subscribers in Q1 2016 against 1.839 million in Q1 2015 and 4.261 million in 2015.
ARPU of Telenor India fell 8 percent to INR 90 — primarily driven by lower voice consumption and the impact from reduced mobile termination rate.
Telenor Group aims to have 200 million customers accessing data services on its network globally. Telenor India has a target of having 50 percent of its users to access Internet by 2017. Telenor India is number 4 in its six operational circles in revenue market share and customer market share.
