Optical network market share: Huawei slips, Ciena and Alcatel-Lucent gain

Infonetics Research today said optical network market share of Huawei slipped in the first quarter of 2014, while Ciena’s rose 26 percent and Alcatel-Lucent’s increased 8 percent.

The report said WDM optical spending increased 8 percent y-o-y and 100G makes up 20 percent of the market. This is 7th straight quarter of year-over-year growth for WDM optical market.

“100G spending worldwide in 2013 was breathtaking, with total port shipments tripling during the year. This equates to around $2 billion in spending related to 100G. That’s a lot-roughly 20 percent of all WDM spending,” said Andrew Schmitt, principal analyst for optical at Infonetics Research.

Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, Huawei, and Infinera are the main telecom equipment vendors in the 100G market.

Optical Network Hardware report for Q1

Global optical spending is down yet again as legacy SONET/SDH continues to slide: Optical network hardware revenue, including WDM and SONET/SDH, declined 2 percent year-over-year in 1Q14, said Infonetics Research.

On a rolling 4-quarter basis, total optical spending was roughly flat, said the report.

EMEA experienced a seasonal Q4 to Q1 drop, but this effect is no longer evident in the U.S., a result of large telecom carriers changing spending patterns and smaller mobile carriers operating on a more project-oriented, rather than calendar-oriented, purchasing cycle.
