Global semiconductor sales reached $627.6 billion in 2024, marking a 19.1 percent increase from the 2023 total of $526.8 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, semiconductor sales amounted to $170.9 billion, which was 17.1 percent higher than the fourth quarter of the previous year and 3.0 percent greater than the third quarter of 2024.
However, sales in December 2024 were $57.0 billion, showing a decline of 1.2 percent compared to November 2024.
The record-breaking sales in 2024 marked a historic milestone for the global semiconductor industry, as it surpassed $600 billion in annual sales for the first time. The strong growth is expected to continue into 2025, with projections indicating another year of double-digit growth.
The regional sales data for 2024 revealed varied trends across different markets. Americas experienced the highest growth, with sales rising by 44.8 percent compared to the previous year. China also saw a significant increase of 18.3 percent, while the Asia Pacific/All Others category grew by 12.5 percent.
However, Japan recorded a decline of 0.4 percent, and Europe saw a drop of 8.1 percent. In terms of month-to-month performance, December sales increased by 3.2 percent in the Americas but declined in all other regions. Asia Pacific/All Others saw a 1.4 percent drop, China declined by 3.8 percent, Japan experienced a 4.7 percent decrease, and Europe faced the steepest decline at 6.4 percent.
The rising global demand for semiconductors is expected to drive significant growth in the U.S. chip manufacturing sector. By 2032, the U.S. is projected to triple its domestic chip production capacity, strengthening supply chains and helping meet the increasing global need for semiconductors.
Among the various semiconductor product categories, logic products led the market with total sales of $212.6 billion in 2024, making it the largest category by revenue. Memory products followed closely behind, witnessing remarkable growth of 78.9 percent to reach a total of $165.1 billion in sales.
Within the memory category, DRAM products stood out with an impressive sales increase of 82.6 percent, the highest percentage growth of any semiconductor product in 2024. These figures highlight the role of memory and logic chips in driving the overall expansion of the semiconductor industry.
