Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked mobile carriers to publish geospatial coverage maps on their websites.
Reliance Jio website shows its True 5G coverage in your city. Reliance Jio is the #1 telecom network operator in India.
Airtel website indicates the availability of 5G.
Website of Vodafone Idea shows the availability of 4G and 3G. Vodafone Idea does not have 5G in India at present.
Customers cannot rely on the mobile network coverage map provided by Jio and Airtel because just the availability of 5G in several small towns may not be enough to ensure quality.
TRAI said the network coverage maps will outline geographical areas where wireless voice and broadband services are available, ensuring subscribers have access to detailed information about network coverage.
This initiative is part of TRAI’s revised Quality of Service (QoS) Regulations for telecom operators, which came into effect on October 1, 2024. According to the directive, telecom companies must publish service-specific coverage maps in a specified format for regions where their wireless services are operational.
“Every service provider providing access service (wireless) shall publish on its website the service-wise geospatial coverage maps… for the geographical areas where wireless voice or wireless broadband service is available for subscription by consumers,” stated the TRAI directive.
From April 1, 2025, telecom operators must ensure that the published maps meet a benchmark of 99 percent working cells for service coverage. If multiple technologies, such as 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G, are available in an area, the maps must prioritize displaying 5G coverage.
The directive specifies that network coverage maps must adhere to a prescribed color scheme, representing technologies based on minimum signal strength measured outdoors. Essential features for users will include a map base layer, technology toggle options, search functionality, a legend, and navigation tools.
The latest initiative from TRAI aims to empower consumers with reliable data while promoting competition among Indian telecom service providers to maintain high-quality network standards.
