its network and Capex strategies will evolve around spectrum assets, network
design planning and new technologies including network and content optimization
solutions.
In association with telecom equipment vendors, we are
developing network and content optimization strategies. Our Capex and network
strategies will depend on availability of spectrum, network design and new
technologies,” Hugh Bradlow, chief technology officer, Telstra, told Telecom
Lead at Mobile Asia Expo 2012.
For most telecom operators, Capex growth is almost flat. New
network roll out strategies to improve quality of service for customers without
adding to the Capex are an important aspect to retain and regain customers.
Capital expenditure of Telstra increased by 18.2 percent to
$1.71 billion in the second half of 2011. The capital program has been smoothed
across the year to improve the efficient use of resources. The increase was
driven by capacity upgrades due to the growing demand for wireless data and
spend on new initiatives to support emerging opportunities.
Bradlow said Telstra is working with mobile equipment
vendors to deploy technologies which can reduce bandwidth consumption during
content uploading / downloading. For instance, when a customer downloads some
content, they consume bandwidth unnecessary. We may be able to bring down this
consumption thanks to new content optimization technologies,” Bradlow added.
Cisco is one of the main equipment vendors for Telstra.
We are looking at best technologies. Besides Cisco, we work
with companies such as Juniper and Ericsson. Cisco is strong in IP area. We
also work with Cisco on Telepresence solutions,” Bradlow added.
OTT players pose significant challenges to telecom
operators. Several operators are in the process of devising strategies.
We encourage them to use our network and gain revenues. Our
strategies are not to stop OTT service providers. We will work with them and at
the same time, we will ensure that our revenues are growing significantly,”
Bradlow added.
