Telecom NZ taps EMC for data centre capacity

Telecom Lead Asia: Telecom NZ, a telecommunications and
IT service provider, has selected a storage array solution from EMC.

The selection of new Symmetrix VMAX data
storage subsystems is a part of substantial investment to expand data centre
capacity.

The subsystems are being used across Telecom’s business
units including Gen-i, delivering capacity of up to 2.5 petabytes.

Information storage and data management fundamentally
underpin the operations of these organisations. The choice of an EMC solution is
confirmation of the critical role played by storage in the provision of
services,” said Phill Patton, country manager of EMC.

As a provider of cloud computing solutions, Gen-i relies
on robust storage resources as an integral component to support its ReadyCloud
suite of cloud services. With EMC solution, Gen-I is now able to achieve
scalability, ease of migration from legacy infrastructure to new platforms,
rigorous cost management and reliability.

Telecom’s requirements for storage continue to grow significantly
from both organic volume increases and the continually developing information
needs of the business. This growth, occurring in both structured and
unstructured data, is predicted to accelerate,” said James Allison, GM for
Shared Technology Operations at Telecom.

Symmetrix VMAX (Virtual Matrix) is a high-end storage
array and each array is capable to contain up to 2,400 hard disk drives,
provide a variety of connection types such as FICON, fibre channel, iSCSI and
gigabit Ethernet.

EMC solutions also incorporate RSA encryption technology
for data security and provide automated tiering, which allocates where data is
stored based on its usefulness to the business.

EMC leads NAS/unified storage market: Gartner

EMC captured the #1 revenue market share position in the
Network Attached Storage/Unified Storage Market.

According to Gartner’s report, EMC revenue attributable
to NAS/unified storage nearly doubled year-over-year to $2.8 billion, making it
the fastest-growing NAS/unified storage vendor.
