Telecom Lead India: Telecom industry body GSMA said
spectrum price range recommended by the Empowered Group of Ministers is high in
terms of international best practice.
The high price could hinder continued investment in
mobile technology in India. According to reports, EGoM recommended Rs 14,000 to
Rs 16,000 as base price for spectrum auction.
The GSMA also believes that spectrum usage charges should
be kept at a minimum.
The Empowered Group of Ministers has taken the advice of
India’s business leaders, economists and mobile industry in consideration.
However, this price range is still prohibitive and we remain concerned that
over the long term it will hamper the delivery of high quality, affordable and
innovative mobile services across the country. Alongside our member operators,
we urge the Cabinet to adhere to international best practice when taking a
final decision, to bring the greatest benefits to India’s economy, society and
its people,” said Anne Bouverot, director general of the GSMA.
