OIL wins TelecomLead.com Innovation Leaders 2019 award

ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT (OIL) has received the TelecomLead.com Innovation Leaders 2019 award for taking broadband connectivity to unconnected Indians in urban locations.

ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT launched a pilot with the initial deployment of ONE Express Wi-Fi by Facebook project in Dharavi, Mumbai, enabling Internet consumers to access 2GB of data per day free for 30 days via OIL Wi-Fi hotspots.

Broadband customers found that the sachet-based Internet plans are more affordable than mobile 4G internet in Dharavi. Home broadband via an Outdoor CPE allowed users to connect their home router / PC to the Internet. ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT benefited from ad-based revenue.

ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT hotspots are capable of delivering Internet speeds up to 1Gbps. This allows the local users in Dharavi access high-speed broadband over Wi-Fi. This also creates additional revenue earning opportunity for the LCO’s who participate in the service.

The pilot in Dharavi was launched with 50 hotspots to assess user feedback and improve experience. All the 50 APs are managed remotely via the Ruckus VSG which is hosted on AWS. A ticketing system ensures any AP downtime is sent to the field engineer of the LCO via SMS.

Social media network Facebook has executed similar projects in India but this was a first of its kind in a dense urban settlement like Dharavi. Post deployment, ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT  was able to get 7000 Wi-Fi subscribers in the pilot across the 50 hotspots.

ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT will be deploying additional access points to cover Dharavi completely.

The pilot project is enabling consumers in Dharavi to get 2GB of data free for 30 days via OIL Wi-Fi hotspots.

OIL has plans to scale up Wi-Fi deployment to 10,000 Access Points and extend reach to underserved areas of Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities. The company also plans to make this business model self-sustaining by bringing in content players and introducing commercial sachet plans.
