Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to switch off its 2G mobile network in Summer 2029, marking another major milestone in its Mobile Transformation Plan. The move will enable the operator to reallocate valuable spectrum resources to more advanced 4G and 5G services, improve network performance, reduce energy consumption, and support its long-term sustainability targets.

The decision follows Virgin Media O2’s completion of its 3G network shutdown in late 2025 and its participation in the UK government-backed voluntary 2G Switch-off Charter. The company aims to ensure a smooth transition for consumers and businesses while maintaining network coverage and service quality.
Less Than 0.5 percent Data Traffic Still Uses 2G
Virgin Media O2 revealed that its 2G network now carries less than 0.5 percent of all mobile data traffic, and the legacy network has already been closed for international roaming services. By retiring 2G infrastructure and reallocating spectrum to newer technologies, the operator expects to deliver faster speeds, stronger coverage, and more reliable mobile connectivity.
The company is investing £700 million in 2026 to modernize its mobile network and meet rising demand for high-speed data services. According to Chief Technology Officer Jeanie York, the transition will allow Virgin Media O2 to focus on delivering efficient and reliable 4G and 5G experiences while minimizing disruption for customers.
Satellite Connectivity Extends Coverage to 95 percent
Earlier in 2026, Virgin Media O2 became the first UK mobile operator to launch a direct-to-device satellite service. The new O2 Satellite offering has increased the company’s landmass coverage to 95 percent, creating what it describes as the UK’s largest network footprint.
The operator plans to conduct trials and customer engagement programs similar to those used during the 3G shutdown process to ensure a seamless migration from 2G services.
Businesses and IoT Users Must Prepare
While the vast majority of consumers will not need to take any action, organizations that continue to rely on 2G connectivity—including businesses using Internet of Things (IoT) devices—will need to upgrade their equipment before Summer 2029 to avoid service disruption.
The switch-off will impact customers across the Virgin Media O2 ecosystem, including O2 Business users and mobile virtual network operators such as giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile. The company said it will contact affected customers well in advance and provide dedicated support resources and trained agents to assist with the transition.
Energy Efficiency and Net-Zero Goals
The shutdown is also expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. Although the 2G network carries less than 0.5 percent of mobile data traffic, it accounts for more than 10 percent of Virgin Media O2’s total cell-site energy consumption. In contrast, 4G and 5G technologies are up to 10 times more energy-efficient. By replacing legacy equipment and expanding modern network infrastructure, Virgin Media O2 expects the initiative to contribute to its broader objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, while supporting growing demand for advanced mobile and IoT services across the UK.
